Sexual aspects have always played a mayor role in art. This is not something that is limited to
our present day erotic art fantasies. From the cave dwellers onward, we humans have needed to visualize
our desires and celebrate the beauty of love. Even the first artworks made by humans could be included in an
Erotic art gallery. Look at the distinct
sexual nature of the "Venus of Willendorf," a small fertility statute. Many ancient carvings and
drawings show
that sexual vision.
The concept of erotic art for entertainment or artistic purposes only is something that is more routine to our
modern times. Before 1900, erotic themes and nudity were used, but the were, more or less, functional in nature. These artworks had a
religious or even magical purpose. Were these artworks actually intended to be erotic. Perhaps that is best
determined by the curators of erotic art museums...
Even if we take some hidden erotic art, like small naughty paintings or sexual fantasy drawings, into
consideration, it is safe to say that erotic art for entertainment purposes came into its own
along with photography.
And looking at the erotic fine art of today, photography is still the favorite medium to express
human sexuality - there are nude photos everywhere. The directness of the medium, the reality
displayed and the easy way to distribute the images are some of the main reasons, I imagine.
Still my favorite medium for erotic art is erotic comics. But there, of course, many erotic artists using
different media, like ceramics, bronze and paintings, and it seems to me that these "other" media are
becoming increasingly popular. Perhaps we have become overwhelemed with displays of this "glamour
photography," and need to see more fantastical, or even magical, sexual images again. Like the ceramic
sculptures of Martino Catalano, or the paintings of Raphael Perez to name just a few of our more visionary
erotic artists.

Nude Figure Drawing Session7 Sep 2010 at 10:00am
Looking for a male model to pose nude for a monthly figure drawing group. Our next session is Tuesday, Sept. 21, 7:00pm-9:00pm. The model will be required to pose nude for 1 hour for approximately 10-20 artists. Sketching begins promptly at 7:30pm so you should arrive with enough time to change into your robe. This is a drink and draw group. So, if you want to arrive at 7:00 pm and have a couple of beers before you pose, feel free!
The session takes place at an artist's studio in Bushwick off of the Morgan stop on the L train. Compensation is $40 for 1 hour of your time.
